The footnotes on my document spill to the next page, which seems to be a common problem. They spill on some pages, when on other it pushes the text up and accommodates for (which is what I want it do always). What do I have to do to keep the footnote on the same page?

I believe you have to set the line height on the Body Text Style to "At
Least" or "Exactly".

See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/Formatting/FootnoteOnDiffPage.htm

Hope this helps
