Footnotes appearing as a symbol instead of numbers

My footnotes were all numbered and suddenly when I reopened the document,
they now appear with a symbol ד and every single footnote has this same
symbol.
How can I change them back to numbers?

What happens if you copy the whole document, except for the final
paragraph mark, into a new document? Does that fix the numbering?

Note: To copy the whole document except for the final paragraph mark,
press Ctrl+A, and then press Shift+Left arrow.

No idea how this might have happened... but there's a good chance the macro
from here will fix it:

As it says in the post, make a backup copy of the document before you try
the macro.
