Footnotes Automatic Renumbering

M

Mark Wiznitzer

I am writing a thesis on Word 97. It is a simple word
processing document with footnotes, but not tables or
insertions.

On the first page that contains footnotes I have
encountered the following problems:

-- two footnote reference numbers remain in the footnotes
despite their being deleted from the text; and

-- the footnote reference numbers and footnotes on this
page of the document skip numbers and will not renumber
automatically, although this has not happened in other
parts of the document.

I have tried to fix this problem using later versions of
Word without success, so I think my problem is embedded in
the document. I have checked for software updated,
reviewed all the Help suggestions, and found no online
Help issue that addresses this problem. Any suggestions?

Are you tracking changes in the document? If so, you'll need to Accept All
Changes in order to see a correct renumbering of the footnotes. If you've
removed the footnotes correctly (by deleting the reference mark in the
document body), the footnotes should have been deleted. When stray footnote
text remains, attempts to delete it will generate an error message ("This is
not an appropriate action for footnotes" or the like). But you can sometimes
use Backspace to pull the paragraph up into the previous footnote, and then
you can delete it.
