Footnotes causing layout problems.

I am currently using Word XP. I have a document with a
single column on the upper portion of the page, then a
continuous section break which after I use a 2 column
section. When a footnote is placed in the single column
upper portion of the page the lower 2 column portion of
the page is moved to the next page and white space is
inserted all the way to the footnote. The footnotes for
the lower portion of the page are also moved to the next
page. I can fool word into formatting correctly by placing
the appropriate superscript identifier and then just
pointing the footnote to a place in the lower portion of
the page. Of course by doing this, when the foot note is
right clicked it does not return you to the proper portion
of the page. Is it even possible for word to handle
footnotes from 2 different sections on the same page?
