And while you're at it, Anne (before clicking "Modify"), you could hold down
the Shift key and move in the "left indent" (i.e., lower) blue margin device
in the ruler. That will create a hanging indent. Then when you type a
footnote, precede it with a hit of the tab key you'll get a nice neat left
margin of notes, with the numbers out to the one side. Much better than the
default raggedness.
By the way, Daiya has told you how to modify the Footnote style. Styles are
a very powerful, time-saving, typography-enhancing feature of Word. If you'd
like some useful references on styles, post back.

* SUGGESTION -- KEEP REVISITING AFTER YOU POST: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is provided; sometimes you'll be asked for further information. Good tips
about getting the best out of posting are at
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/AccessNewsgroups.html and
http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari you may see a
blank page and have to hit the circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current
page" -- two or more times).
