Is it possible to footnote some text in a text box?

No, I'm afraid it isn't. But you can use a frame instead
of a text box!

Thanks for that but how do I insert a frame (as in not a

You can convert an existing text box to a frame (there's a button for that
on the Text Box tab of Format Text Box), or you can insert a new frame using
the Insert Frame button on the Forms toolbar (if you have text selected when
you click it, the text will be enclosed in the frame). If you'll be using
frames often, you'll want to restore the Frame command to the Insert menu
using Tools | Customize.
