Footnotes in tables

We've got a table that goes on for many pages. Many cells are merged. The
table has footnotes now where the footnote number in the document is on one
page and the footnote itself is on another page. I'm sure that this has to
do with the fact that there are merged cells; however, I really cannot undo
the merged cells. Also, putting "returns" in the footnotes themselves in
order to move a footnote to the next page isn't the solution either, because
later on some footnotes end up on their own page.

Does anyone have a solution to this very vexing problem?

Unfortunately, footnotes in table cells can be a bit tricky in Word. Usually
I find it easier not to use actual footnotes in tables, but instead use
superscript numbers (or letters) for footnote references and manually type
the "footnotes" in the last row of the table (after removing the bottom,
left, and right borders and merging the cells).

Thank you, Stefan, for your prompt reply. It's a shame that I will have to
do it this way, but it seems as if I'll have no choice -- at least in tables
with merged cells. Thanks again!

FWIW, I do the same as Stefan. Table footnotes are really supposed to be at
the foot of the table, not at the foot of the page, anyway.
