Footnotes

In MS Word 2k, I have a footnote which uses the custom
mark 1. How can I include the same footnote custom mark of
1 that shares the same footnote text?

I can create the footnote marks, however only when the
cursor hovers over one of the markers does the footnote
text appear but not the other footnote marks.

Hi,

Not totally clear on your problem. If you want to "Refer to the same
footnote or endnote more than once", search for that topic in Help. Is that
why you are using "1" as a custom mark?

If the yellow pop-ups are concerning you, I think those are inconsistent
anyhow. But if you manually inserted "1" as a custom mark, to refer to the
auto-numbered footnote "1", there is no way for Word to tell that those
refer to the same note--Word reads the formatting of your doc, *not* its
text. If you use the cross-reference method described in the Help topic
above, then Word will realize two numbers refer to the same note, and the
yellow pop-ups should work.

*If* I have understood what you are trying to do correctly, this should
solve your problem.

I'm not clear on why you are using 1 as a custom mark instead of using the
built-in 1, 2, 3 numbering (you can restart on each page if desired). And is
it that you're trying to create cross-references to the same footnote?
Please explain more clearly what you're trying to do.

First of all, dispense with the custom mark and use normal 1, 2, 3,
numbering. Then use Insert | Cross-reference to Footnote: Footnote number.

I must not be explaining correctly what I am trying to
achieve. Let's try again.

What I am trying to achieve is to have a paricular
footnote value (whatever the number it is, but it has to
be the same) and use it more than once. For example, I
have the following text: -

Once upon a time1 there was ...

.... and they lived happily1 ever more.

1Some footnote message.

Where the value of 1 (or any any other SAME value) appears
in both sentences, I want it to refer to the SAME footnote
message. Hence, when I move the mouse cursor over the
footnote marker of 1, wherever it appears in the text, I
want the same footnote message to appear. At the moment I
can only have one footnote message appearing when I move
my mouse over one of the footnote markers but not the rest
even though they share the SAME footnote marker by using
cross reference. All that the cross reference does is
place a 1 (in this example) against the text but doesn't
give me the SAME hovering footnote message.

Thank u for your patience.

To repeat a footnote number you must insert a cross-reference to the
footnote number. You will not get the footnote text in a ScreenTip since
this is only for your convenience in creating the document, which Word
assumes you will be printing.
