Is there anyway to change the spacing between footnotes or
to adjust the space between the number and the text of the
footnote?

Generally footnotes are in Footnote Text style. To
adjust the spacing between them, modify that style to
have Points After. I use 6 points. Word will default to
one space between the footnote reference and the footnote
text, but you can type a tab in between them.

When I go to format, styles and formatting there is no
Footnote Text style. Am I looking in the wrong place for
it?

Frustratingly, the Styles and Formatting task pane doesn't display all the
styles available in Word even when "Show" is set to "All Styles," and
Footnote Text is one of the styles that is not included. But you can access
the style by setting "Show" to Custom. This opens the Format Settings
dialog, and if you click Styles... at the bottom, you'll open the Format
Style dialog, from which you can access Footnote Text and all the other
styles.

Or, if you are in Normal view and have your Style Area
showing on the left, you can double-click on the Style
called Footnote Text and modify it that way.

yes to both. To adjust the spacing between footnotes, just
highlight the footnotes, click on "Format" then "Paragraph"
and make your adjustments per the pop up window, just as
you would any paragraph in your document.

To adjust the space between the number and the text of the
footnote, just click right in front of the text and press
your space bar as many times as you want it to be spaced...

Melanie (and anyone else watching),

Katrina's solution below is perfectly valid if you only have one document in
which you want to re-format footnotes and you are not likely to want to
amend footnote spacing again. Otherwise, Srara's and Suzanne's styles-based
solution is the way to go, because it will be much quicker to format future
documents and provides perfect uniformity in formatting.
