For Garfield-n-Odie Re; Word 2003 Under WinXP Pro SP2 "Not Responding"

Evidently the imbedded graphic was not causing Word 2003 to lock up in a
"Not Responding" state when I tried to save the document as I originally
thought. Interestingly enough, when I click File and select Save, Word 2003
actually saves the document. However, immediately thereafter Word 2003 goes
into a "Not Responding" state.

There are no tables in the document at all. There are 3 sections, however,
I don't suspect that they contribute to this problem.

When viewing the document in Print Layout, there appear in several locations
some inaccessible square symbols followed immediately by ¶ symbols. I have
no idea how those symbols got into the document. In one case, the square
symbol is directly above a lone footnote at the end of a page. In other
cases, the square symbols appear immediately following inserted pictures.
However, the squares do not appear after all inserted pictures; they only
appear after a few pictures. In every case the squares are absolutely
inaccessible. And.... viewing the document in Print Preview, the squares
appear in the document; they also print.

I do not know if hose squares are indeed the origin of the document's
apparent corruption, however, I can't find anything else that would appear
to cause the problem.

I would very much appreciate your help in finding out how to get rid of
those unwanted square symbols. I certainly don't want them to print in the
document, and if they are indeed the source of corruption, I need to get rid
of them.

I saved the document in .rtf format, then closed & restarted Word, then
opened the .rtf file. That's when I discovered what surely must be the root
cause of the problem. A portion of the text included passages I copied from
another document where that portion contained Index Entries in IE format.
There is no index set up in this document, so I imagine that gave Word a fit
trying to resolve.

That process also got rid of the inaccessible square symbols.

So, apparently, this problem is solved.
