force default file format to pptx

I cannot set the default file format to pptx ("presentation") in 2007. The
Options-Save..Format pulldown allows it to be selected, but shows it in dark
blue when selected but it does not "take" and is always back to "97..2003"
format next time., and the Save As format is agin 97..2003 I have a
blank.potx default template. The only add-in is Google Desktop.

FYI: I have Professional 2007. Conrtol Panel shows Office Standard 2003
installed also ( I think this might be for Outlook, OneNote, Project etc).
wondering if this is confusing it.

Anyone know how to resolve. ?

Hi bobA

Try office button -> powerpoint options -> save -> save files in this
format -> select 'powerpoint presentation' from the drop down list.
