Under Windows XP, is there a way of forcing a dial-up modem to disconnect
after email send/receive has been completed?

This used to be an option, if I recall, on dial connections in earlier
versions of Windows.

Your Outlook version would be in play, not your Windows version.

OK, I'm running Outlook 2003 SP2 and I'd also like to know about Outlook
Express 6.

Outlook 2003 no longer supports managing dial up connections.
It MIGHT disconnect automatically if you set your connection type to Phone
Line then configure an automatic polling interval.
No idea about OE. Ask in an OE group.
