Force word 97 to open doc instead of word xp

John

We have a special situation here in that we need word 97
for a particular function to operate. We'd also like to
offer the latest word app to the user on the same Pc. We
need to force windows to open word 97 when double clicking
on doc and dot files. Word xp seems to override this when
its loaded on the same machine as word 97. Has anyone seen
a way around this?

Thank you!

I think you need to modify your extension properties. I usually there by
opening My Computer and choosing >Tools>File Options. (This may be slightly
different depending on your versions). On the FIle Types tab, you can
change the "open with" property association between the extensions .DOC and
..DOT to point to the W97 exe instead of the WXP exe.

There is no way to stop this. Word will reclaim its file association. It is
only a problem when opening documents from Explorer. You can still open
documents from within either version of Word.

The only true solution would be to create a new partition and double
booting system with 97 on one system, 2002 on the other. This, of course,
you may find even less convenient.
