Forced to reply with same format

I know this question has been asked in many threads, and I've read the
"etiquette-based" answers regarding proper replies in the orginal format, but
I can't seem to find the answer for this particular one.
One of my correspondents changed his default email to "bold." He and I use
the same style, size, color and html, but if I try to negate the bold in my
response I can't do it. I CAN do it, however, by changing my reply first to
plain text, and then back to html, but this seems crazy. Why can't I just
turn of the 'bold' icon? Is this "forcing me to comply with his format" by
design??

Knothole,

In outlook 2000/2003 you can go to Tools/Options/Mail Format and then select
fonts.

Choose the font you want to use for New messages/Replying and
Forwarding/Plaintext and then select always use my fonts at the bottom of
this page.

That should then give you your font when replying to mail.

I forgot to mention that I already have "always use my fonts" for replies
checked - and I do use Outlook 2003, which I also failed to mention. With
other emailers this problem does not occur. For example, I just replied to
someone else who uses arial font with blue color, and my reply was in my
specified black Times New Roman - no problem! But with the issue I
originally wrote about, my "regular" font does not supercede the sender's
"bold" font, and forces my reply to be as his is, even though I have mine
specified for responses. Once I see the bold text of my writing, I've tried
to turn off the bold icon on the toolbar, but as soon as I commence writing
again, it turns bold. Could it be some setting on HIS computer that's doing
this, since it seems to be unique with correspondence to him?
