ForceShellExecute fixed my problem but WHY?

I had a hyperlink that navigates to page which has a passport login.
Intially it would not navigate properly to the exacte query string and would
instead take me to the home page.....however when I changed the
ForceShellExectue to 1 it fixed this problem....I know this is only for
dealing with default browser options...but my default was already IE! There
seems to be some security issue hear but I dont know what it is....does
anyone have any ideas?

Yes this has to do with creating a hyperlink in a word document. The
hyperlink is to a page which has a passport login.
