Foreign lg problems

A PC user sent me a Word document with both English and
Korean. My PC opens the document and I can read both the
English and the Korean. I transferred the document to my
Mac OS X 2.8 for use and the Korean part is completely
unreadable. I have Korean script loaded as I have used
Korean, generated from this Mac on earlier occassions.
This is the first time I have tried to import a Word
document from a PC with a foreign language included. Any
suggestions?

The Korean part needs Unicode support which Word X doesn't have... One
option is to save the file as RTF adn open it in TextEdit.

We also managed to save as an html file, copy and paste
into Word X, highlight, change font to Apple Gothic -TWICE!
Yes, highlight again, go to Apple Gothic a second time and
voila, Korean.

The whole goal here is to paste into Final Cut Pro for
subtitling without having to have a Korean sit here along
side me.

Appreciate you sharing a little easier way and for telling
me WHY it would not work.

I found, for Japanese, that if you go to the preferences, and click
compatibility, then click the font substitution button, the bits in your
document that don't display should show up in the missing font column as the
unreadable characters, and you will be able to select a font for display
from the pull down menu at the bottom, presumably the Korean font you
normally use.

Then when you close the preferences it should have substituted all those
unreadable bits for the font you specified.

It worked in Japanese, but on a related note, if you have any ideas about
how to get office to handle double byte files names, I'd be indeed grateful.
