Form/Subform Update Error

Hello,
I have a recurring error when I try to update fields in a
subform linked to my primary form.

The main form is employee demographics (frmEmployeeData)
and the subform is regarding various tests the employee
might have taken (subfrmTestDetail). I have a couple of
side tables that are lookups for the combo boxes in the
subform.

When I try to update a combo box that may have the same
value as another employee's I get the message "The changes
you requested were not successful because they would create
duplicate values in the index, primary key, or
relationship..." Then I am told to change the data ( I
did), remove the index (did this too) or redefine the
index. All fields were checked for index properties of Yes
(No Duplicates) and changed to allow dups or the index
property was set to "NO".

I can't seem to get the data to stick, however. Has anyone
had this experience before, or, more importantly does
anyone know how to fix it?

I'm fairly new at this, so any advice would be greatly
appreciated!
