format a word without highlighting it

Hey gang. Does anyone know how to turn the feature on that allows a
word to be made bold or italic (or whatever) simply by putting the
cursor anywhere within the word? For example, if I want to italicize
the word "frustrating," I'd just put the cursor somewhere in the word
and hit ctrl-i.

MS-Word used to do this on my machine (and does it on other machines I
use), but it somehow got disabled on this machine and I can't figure
out how to turn it back on.

TIA!
