format background picture

how do i change the background picture from a quad (4
pictures of the same one on a page) to a stretch picture
to cover the whole page ?

and how do i change the gradient of the picture so that
my words /typing is visible ?

Select the picture, then choose Format|Picture from the
menue and use the 'Size' tab to re-size it and
the 'Layout' tab to send it behind the text.
