Format Bullets and Numbering Shuts down Word 2003, why?

D

David Sands

In any document, new, with or without outlines or bulleted items, when I
click on Format/Bullets and Numbering Word simply shuts down with an error
sent to Microsoft. The error has no information in it. This started
happening last week. I use outline numbered documents all the time. I
cannot find any reference to this problem in the knowledge base or anywhere
else. How can I recover? I have already tried uninstalling Word 2003 and
reinstalling. That did not work.

Often this is a corruption in the Word DataKey. Run Regedit, navigate to the
DataKey, backup the DataKey and then delete it.

It worked. You just saved me from a complete uninstall of Office including
deleting all registry entries and then a reinstallation. Since my
installation disks are pre Service Pack 1, it would have taken me about 1/2
day to recover.

Thank you very much. I don't know why Microsoft is so obtuse. In addition,
I don't know why when you uninstall one of their products, it leaves the
Registry Keys intact.

Only one word of comment. the key List Gallery Presets has spaces between
the words. When I did my registry search I typed it in exactly as you sent
it with no spaces. When find did not "find" it, I looked manually until I
found it.

Thanks again.

You are welcome.

This is so that an upgrade shouldn't wipe out your customizations, I
believe.

Sorry about that. Apparently I didn't quite remember the name. (Word 2007,
which is the only Word version that I currently have installed, no longer
has that registry entry.)
