format cell to view value not formula

Using Excel 97-SR1:
I have a cell that contains a formula. The formula works
fine but if I edit the existing formula to include an
ISBLANK() function, the cell displays the function rather
than the correct value. I have done this on several cells
and only have the display problem on cells that are
formatted as text. Cells formatted as number display the
correct value instead of the formula.

I have tried reformatting the cells. I even tried
clearing the format and then reestablishing. I have tried
turning on and off the Tools Option for display formula.
Nothing seems to work.

SR,

Change the formatting, and then re-enter the formula. Cell formatting
is applied to the formula result, with the exception of Text, which
treats any entry as text.
