Format date in concat function

I am using a formula to concat the value of two user-specified fields, a text
field and a date field. Although the date field is formatted to display the
date in MM/DD/YYYY format, the date that is displayed as a result of the
concat function uses the XML format (e.g., 2004-11-24). Is there any way to
make the date value use the format as specified for the field?
