Format font after number

Bruce

Don't know if this is numbering or document management, so
I will try it here. I use styles for outline numbering.
Level 2 of my numbering is regular font. I would like to
italicize the text without doing the same to the number
itself. I tried creating a character style, and I tried
direct formatting, but I still end up with italicized
numbers. I tried formatting my Level 2 style as regular
font, but apparently the character style overrides the
font settings in the paragraph style, so nothing happens.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply, but I have to tell you that it did
not work, perhaps because I have used styles for the
levels of the outline numbering. I did find a trick that
worked, though. If I select less than the entire numbered
paragraph, I can apply either a character style or direct
formatting without changing the format of the number. I
then select the remainder of the paragraph and apply the
same format. The format of the number remains unchanged.
By the way, I suspected at first that the problem was that
I was selecting the paragraph mark (which contains the
formatting for the paragraph) along with the text, but
that was not the case. I have run into this before in
some way or the other having to do with outline numbering,
although the details escape me. I just know that it all
feels familiar. If this is a feature (as opposed to a
bug), I would really like to know what it is supposed to
accomplish.
Thanks again for your input.

Bruce -

You must first create *paragraph* styles and apply them to sample
text. Then you place your cursor on the first level style and
*through the style* go to the outline numbering gallery, click the
window that looks closest to the numbering scheme you want, then click
Customize. That takes you to the Customize Outline Numbered List
dialog where you then *link* each level to one of the styles you've
created. Unless a style is so linked, it cannot be said to be an
outline-numbered style.

You'll discover that the font for the paragraph number, which is
determined at the top of the Cuztomize Outline Numbered List dialog,
is completely independent of the font in the style itself. That's one
of the major pains about setting up a numbering scheme: you have to
go to two different places to make the font the same for both number
and style.

Bottom line: all *number attributes* and indentation are determined
in the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog, whereas all *text
attributes* and alignment, space before and space after, are
determined in the style itself.

Display nonprinting characters if necessary so that you can see the
paragraph mark (¶)at the end of the paragraph. Select just the paragraph
mark and remove the italic formatting.
