Format icon inoperable

All of a sudden all of my Word documents have the
formatting symbol thruout; including the blank "new"
document. The icon for formatting is inoperable. I.e.
(show/hide).
I am running Windows XP, Word 2002. I have checked for
viruses and spy ware. I have "repaired" Word two times
but it still show up.
