format numbering in word for mac 2004

am a new mac user; have tried eight times now to number four sentences in a
word document. Have used the drop down list and the format pallet several
times each. In all instances word quits and offers to send a report to apple.

Anyone else experience this problem? Have numbered lists in various
versions of word (on a PC) for years with no similar problem?!

This is some sort of corruption, not a built-in problem.

If you can number lists in a different document, then your original
document is corrupt and you should use the fixes here on it:

If it happens in a new clean document too, consistent and reproducible
problems in Word usually respond to one of the standard troubleshooting
measures, which you will find listed here:

Work through them one by one until something helps. If nothing does,
post back. The most common culprit is a corrupted Normal template or
damaged Preferences file.
