Format Painter in Word X

N

Norseman

I'm taking a college class in MS Word 2003 (PC) and just learned about
Format Painter.

I'm trying to use Format Painter on Mac Word .x and it does not work
the same as the PC version.

On the PC, I position the cursor on what format I want to copy,
double-click the Format Painter icon. I then click on the left side of
the line of text and the entire line is formatted. I would go to the
beginning of any line and click once to format the entire line.

On the Mac, however, I cannot format an entire line with one click. I
have to double-click EACH word in order for Format Painter to work.
When I click to the left of the line, the line is highlighted but not
formatted.

What's wrong??

Thanks

Hi Norseman,

It seems to make a difference what view is being used.

In Word 2004 Format Painter works as you described in Normal and Online
Layout, but not in Page Layout view.

In Word's help search for the topic "Select text and graphics by using
the mouse." It has a list of various methods of selecting.

Jim,

I think you misunderstood my question. I understand how to
select/highlight a line. My problem is that Format Painter will NOT
apply the format to a selected line. When I click to the left of the
line, the line is highlighted BUT NOT formatted. In order for the
formatting to take place, I have to double-click on each word of the
sentence.

For example, I click on a word or line that is bolded and underlined.
Then I either single or double-click the Format Painter button
(telling it to copy bold and underline). When I go to a different line
with plain text that I want bolded and underlined and click to the
left of that line, the line is just highlighted and not bolded and
underlined. If, however, I double click a word in the line Format
Painter applies the bold and underline to that word only.

You haven't described what happens when you're in Normal View, as opposed to
Page Layout view. That's what Jim was suggesting : did you try it?

Both the Normal View and the Page Layout View does exactly the same
thing. The unformatted line gets highlighted but not formatted. This
is Word X with Service Release 1.

Everything is now working. Apparently, Word and another application
was "corrupted". I ran Tech Tools Pro yesterday as general
maintenance. I was not thinking about the Format Painter problem. I
just tried the Format Painter and it works normally. My other
application is now also working properly.

I normally run Tech Tools or DiskWarrior when I encounter a larger
problem such as applications not being able to launch or crashes
unexpectantly. Word was working with everything I was using at the
time except for Format Painter so I never thought of using a repair
tool.
