Format Painter removes numbers & bullets

S

Steve Franks

How can I prevent the format painter removing formatting
from the source paragraph when it applies it.
It mainly happens with bullets and numbering:

I chose a heading style which has been formatted with
outline numbering. (I have set this up based on Heading 1
with one style per level)

I apply the formatting to a 'Normal' paragraph. This ends
up as expected with the next number, but the original
paragraph is no longer numbered and what's worse my
heading style is no longer numbered.

N.B. I have removed all of the useless Autoformat options.
This also happens with Bullets.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

Don't use Format Painter to apply the style. Instead, click in the document
and choose the Heading 1 style from the Styles list (or press Ctrl+Alt+1 or
Alt+Shift+Left Arrow).

Format Painter is easiest, but I use both methods and I'm
not certain that only Format Painter causes the corruption.

The problem occurs most with Heading 2, which loses its
numbering and therefore indentation. I have to correct the
style definition repeatedly in some documents.

Hi Steve

It sounds like Heading 2 might have got itself attached to two different list templates, or, is not attached to a list template at
all. If you work through the process described at http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html it might settle
down. Part of the trick is ensuring that you *always* fix the numbering by first putting your cursor in a Heading 1 paragraph, even
if you need to fix something about Heading 2.

Hope this helps.

I've been very careful to do set up numbering properly.
These problems have dogged me for about 6 years, so when I
found the solution I applied it religiously.

It may be enemy action, as the document has to be shared I
placed the template on a network drive.
Word makes it too easy for naïve users to mess up one's
carefully crafted styles.

Life's too short to worry about it, I'll just keep
correcting the problem.
Thanks for your help,
Steve
