format pivot subtotals

When you use a pivot table and put subtotals in a field, you can change the
formatting on all of the same level subtotals by clicking on the left part of
the cell containing one subtotal (mouse turns into an arrow). Any idea how
to turn that feature on or off?

In Excel 2003, on the PivotTable toolbar, click the PivotTable button
Click Select, then click Enable Selection, to toggle from On to Off

In Excel 2007, on the Ribbon, click the Options tab under PivotTable Tools
In the Actions group, click Select, then click Enable Selection

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, especially iff you have
multiple level of sub-total. Another issue with Preserve Cell
Formatting with Update, when you refresh the data it would be OK, but
when you change the page (let say you have a page field for Month,
when you change from one month to the other all the formats are gone)
and you have to individually format each page

SUCKKKKKKKKKK :(
