If you're thinking of something like "insert 2 picas after this table" as a
property of the table such as FrameMaker, no, Word cannot do that.

Top marks for brevity, Martha, but from your description I don't know what
your problem is.
Could you describe in reasonable detail what you are trying to achieve, what
you have done already, and exactly what isn't working as you expect? In
doing so, please clarify whether "space after" means the points of spacing
after a paragraph for text inside the table, or the same thing associated
with the characteristics of a paragraph following the table, or something to
do with the table itself (i.e., not text paragraphs). Give us the details
and I'm sure someone can help (maybe even me).

guessing -- I'm a bit stunted in that area
