Format Troubles

I'm having trouble with my Word X on my powerbook G4. If I pull up a
recent or old file and most of the time all formatting has been lost
and it's plain text with a pages and pages of nonsense
example......

Folder:Attachments Folder:thesis statement.doc
Allen Herrskowitz^Macintosh HD:Users:lsutherlandocuments:Eudora
Folder:Attachments Folder:thesis statement.doc

:This is extremely annoying and I can't keep anything formatted except
if i pull it up under recent the recent documents. but this means i
can only keep 9 documents at a time with the correct format before i
lose them... please help if anyone knows whats wrong... i checked my
preferences and my format box says normal and I am saving everything as
a word document.

Yeah. This is a known bug in the way the File>Open mechanism works.

To correct it:

1) Start Word

2) File>Open and browse to a Word .doc file

3) Change "Enable" to "All Word Documents"

4) Open the file.

The problem will be fixed. What has happened is that at some pint you have
changed the "Enable" setting to "Recover text from any file". The bug is
that that setting should last for only one operation. Instead, it persists
until you change it...
