Formating Dates in Mail Merge

I have an ACCESS database and I have formatted the dates in the ACCESS
datadase to Short Date format. I was hoping that this format would be
inherited by WORD in mail merge but it is not.

How do I format the dates in Mail Merge?

Or use the Format function in a query in Access to convert the date to text
and use the query as the datasource.
