Formatting a TOC

Hello. I'm writing up a Word 2007 doc, and was trying to create a TOC.
However, the problem is, the text I am trying to put into the TOC is bold,
and two different colours. So my question is, how do I create a TOC that does
NOT format the text automatically? I know of the Shift+Alt+O keystroke to
"mark" entries, but I cannot figure out how to get that to work with either a
manual or automatic TOC in Word. I tried modifying the formatting for a TOC
style, but that didn't help. I guess my main problem is getting a TOC that
accepts my S+A+O keystroke as a marked entry.

Thanks for any help!

Note that only direct formatting will be reflected in the TOC. Therefore, if
you are using Word's built-in heading styles, you should modify them to
include the desired formatting instead of applying formatting directly to
text.

On the other hand, if you are saying that you do want (some) direct
formatting in your headings and you are trying to prevent that from showing
up in the TOC, then you need to mark TOC entries. After you've marked
entries (via the Mark Table of Contents Entry dialog box), which actually
adds TC fields to your document, you will have to create a TOC that picks up
those TC fields.

In Word 2007, click the References tab of the ribbon. Click Table of
Contents, and then click Insert Table of Contents. In the dialog box, click
Options. Make sure to check the "Table entry fields" option (and clear
"Styles" and "Outline levels"). Click OK twice.
