Formatting - an irritating row of hyphens

M

How can I stop this happening? I type in a few asterisks
(****), hit return and get a row of hyphens (-------------
etc). Very useful if you want a row of hyphens. If I then
continue typing and go back to delete the hyphens after
I've finished, the hyphens are apparently embedded on the
page and I end up deleting the preceeding text but not the
hyphens. It must be something to do with autoformating but
I can't figure out what! Help me out of this hyphen hell.

Mark,

Actually you have created a paragraph border due to your
AutoFormat As You Type settings. To turn this off, use
Tools>AutoCorrect Options>AutoFormt As You Type tab and
uncheck "Borders" in the Apply as You Type sections.

If you want to elimate the majority of this type of
maddening behavior with Word, then uncheck all five
options.

To get rid of the border, with the cursor above the
border, click Format>Borders and Shading. On the Borders
tab, click the panel labeled "None"
