formatting applied to rest of document i.o. slected text

Hi there,
When I try to apply a format (i.e. bold or center) to just one selected word
or line, Word XP changes the rest of the document in that style. After
CTRL-Z the right formatting is applied.
How can I make Word apply the formatting just to the slected text?
