Formatting Autoshape Circles

I've been set a task I'm having trouble with. I have to make a diagram with
4 big, brown circles that overlap each other slightly (2 above, 2 below) and
one smaller, yellow one in the middle. This should look like a flower. The
bit I'm having trouble with is that the overlapping bits should look like
orange petals but I,m not sure how to make just that bit of the circle
orange. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Try double-clicking on the circle(s) and setting the transparency to say 40%.
Does this work?

Thanks again ,

It does give me the shape I need, but i'm not sure how to get the color. My
circles are brown and the overlapping "petal" sections need to be orange. Any
ideas?

Cheers,

You can't color these intersections separately. And you can't cut them out
in PowerPoint. Either you draw a Freeform over the "petals" and color that
orange. Or you use a vector image editing Program like Illustrator to draw
these shapes with separate intersection objects.

Best regards,
Ute

The first suggestion sounded so reasonable that I had to try it, and it
works. I'm using 2002, and here's what I did:
1. Make the four brown circles as described. As arranged, there is white
background diamond-like shape in the center. Keep the brown at full strength.
2. Put a slightly smaller circle in the middle. Use "no fill" at first to
see to get it centered.
3. Color the last circle, which is on top of all the others, bright yellow
set at 50% transparency. The result is a pale (50%) yellow diamond, and the
intersections of the circles are a rusty orange color. Not Halloween orange,
to be sure, but definitely contrasting with the dark brown. Does that help,
Damian?

I've had issues with how PPT won't let you cut an AutoShape and color the
pieces, but this seemed to work pretty well.

Sometimes the Venn diagram (Insert | Diagrams) will work for things like
this. Just depends how picky you need to be with the colors. :)
