Formatting Borders

I am trying to format some borders in a table at 3 points,
others left at .5 point. In previous versions of Word, I
was able to use the Line Style drop-down box under the
Draw list of toolbar buttons to format lines. In Word
2002, however, this toolbox button has all its options
grayed out when I'm in a table.

I've also used the line feature in regular text; now I
can't.

Is this no longer an option with Word 2002? Why?

In addition, converting text to table does strange things
to my styles (indenting it various amounts, etc.) It might
be something in the original author's document (I deal
with hundreds of authors a week, so don't ask me to ask
them to change the way they format documents).

With your insertion point in the table or, more
specifically, the cell(s) that you wish to format, choose
Format>Borders and Shading. Watch the drop down list
beneath the preview area to see *what* you're applying
borders to (e.g., table, cell, paragraph). Use the
thickness list in the middle of the dialog box to change
the line weight (do this *before* you apply the borders in
the preview area--changing line formatting *after* you
apply borders in the preview area will not affect those
already-applied borders, and you'll have to erase them and
re-apply them to see your new weight choice.
