Formatting cell time format

I'm having real problems with Excel 97 when I format a Cell for time it
seems to put the date in as well I'm really confused is there something
I am doing wrong ??

Dear he / she;

It may sound simple and I expect you to have tried it, but did you try on
the menu :

Format | Cells | Custom and in type entered : mm:ss

This must make cell entries appear in the correct format.

nope still doesn't work

I set the format to mm:ss and when I enter in a time for instance

09:00 it changes the field to 20/01/1900 00:00:00

help!

Check your regional settings.

When you enter a time, it needs to be entered using the same separator as is
specified in your regional settings as a Time Separator.

The formatting only affects the display of the result.
