Formatting Cells

I have transfered a spreadsheet from Office 98 to Excel X for the Mac
and I cannot get the cell formatting to work. The cells appear as one
number 5000 rather than 50.00 What is the answer? I cannot find a
reference anywhere in help.

There is a checkbox in the "Preferences", "Edit" tab, named "Fixed decimal".
It may be checked (and the "Places" set to "2").

If this is so, uncheck it.
