Formatting Columns

I wish to format a column so that the numbers:
1236785555 will appear (123) 678-5555.

I have tried several different things suggested in "Help" but nothing seems
to work.

"Several different things" really doesn't tell us much, but the simplest &
most direct way is to select the cell(s), then go to Format> Cells> Special
& select Phone Number. That format gives exactly what you described.

If this isn't working for you you'll need to provide more details, including
which version of Excel you're using and what other "things" you've tried.
