Formatting Corruption!!

Gary

I work as senior IT Technician in a High School.
Users have recently been approaching me saying that
previously saved word docs now open up with 'square boxes'
in place of text throughout the document.
I have applied all of the latest Office XP patches but
still the same problem occurs. Any one know how this could
be resolved? The kids are losing coursework with this
problem, any help would be appreciated.

Hi Gary

Check whether you have the File > Open dialog set to 'Recover Text from any
document' instead of Word docs.

There's no need to lose the text; just copy it, boxes and all, by "copy and
paste" to notepad, and the text will be there. What's happening is that you
are using a font which is on your machine, but not on the students. One of
my friends is always sending me documents in "Times New Roman Special G1"
because he thinks it's the same as TNR - I have to copy the "text" to
Notepad (which converts it all to ASCII) before I can read it ;-)

But he's 75 so I just thank my stars that he sends anything at all;
