Formatting endnotes

I have a number of endnotes in a long document. Usually, the appear as neat,
small numbers but occassionally, for unknown reasons, the numbers (within the
text) default to darker, larger numbers. I cannot find any answers as to
why and it's really annoying. Can anyone help. Thanks

Hi pdlb,

The endnote/footnote markers are usually just a superscripted version of the underlying font. It's quite possible to remove the
superscripting, though (accidentally or deliberately). Also, if you insert a cross-reference elsewhere in the document to an
existing footnote, that cross-reference does not get the automating superscripting, however.

Unless you insert the cross-reference as "Endnote number (formatted)." For
actual endtnote references, reapplying the Endnote Reference character style
will restore the superscripting. This can be done with Replace, searching
for ^e (Special: Endnote Mark) and replacing with Format: Style: Endnote
