Formatting footnotes in MSWord 2000

This is the first time I've used this forum and I don't know how to post this in the right group, but here goes: how do you delete the footnote number but not delete the footnote reference? For instance, if I want to have footnotes 4 through 7 after one paragraph, I should be able to put 4-7 rather than 4,5,6,7. But I haven't been able to figure out how, without getting rid of the reference too.

I did a search on footnotes and found a lot of questions and answers but did not see this one. I hope someone can help.

1. Insert all the footnotes as usual, but don't bother with spaces or
commas; just pile them up: 4567.

2. Insert an en dash after the 4 or before the 7.

3. Select 56 and format it as Hidden text (Ctrl+Shift+H).

Note, however, that many style manuals suggest that you combine these
footnotes. If they were sprinkled throughout the paragraph, they would still
be excessive, but there is really no reason to have multiple footnotes piled
up at the end. Presumably they are source notes; just put all the sources in
a single footnote, separated by semicolons. (The exception is when you are
using a numbered reference list, but in that case the numbers would not
necessarily be consecutive.)
