Formatting in multilevel lists

I have been working in a document that involves a multilevel list format.
When I first started working with this document (previously created by others
- I am re-formatting to get it to match several other documents of similar
subject) I was able to hit return and then tab over to change to the next
level. (i.e. - On level 1 "1.1", hit return "1.2" then hit tab "1.2" changes
to "A").
Since my start on this I have since selected/or hit something that
discontinued it from doing this... now it just tabs over.
If I thought this was going to be a one-time thing, I would not fret,
however I have approximately 20 more documents that I have to do similar to
this AND I am sure there will be projects in the future that require the same
thing.
Please, if there is anyone out there who can help me, I would be forever
indebted!
