Formatting in word-- how do I change it?

Here's the problem. I typed three asterisk: ***, hit enter, and it
suddenly turned into a dotted line, which i CAN NOT GET RID OF NOW!
So obviously there's some kind of auto-formatting going on, but I
can't seem to find out how to turn it off. Can anyone help me?
It's word 2000 that I'm working on.

I just tried that. It does the same thing but then if I hit the backspace
key all is well, Try that. Hopefully, someone else can explain what's going
on!

A company that does this to its customers, that has caused the same
annoyance to millions of customers--and everyone of those customers has
had to search and ask the same question to solve the problem--show that
it just doesn't care.
