Formatting Issue

When I format a word, sentence, etc., Word reformats the ENTIRE document
[bolding, centering, underlining, font size change, etc.]. I then have to
"undo" or CTRL Z to get just the word or sentence to hold the formatting.
This is not only frustrating, but time consuming. I've had this happen
before in Word, and have uninstalled and re-installed Word several times to
try to correct it. Help please!
