Formatting Issues

I am unable to change the formatting of a column to zip, despite having
tried every methid I can think of. I still get an error message from
each cell in the column, but now the pop-up field telling me what the
error is doesn't work either.

I also tried to follow directions for either entering data across
multiple sheets or copying data and filling across multiple sheets, but
neither function seems to work.

Does anything in this product work?

I tried same function on PC Office 2003 and get same result - error
message is number stored as text - maybe this is an error that I should
just ignore - by the way, the error message doesn't appear if the cell
has a zip+4 entry in it.

The fill across worksheet function or data entry in multiple sheets at
same time did not work on PC either.

This means that the values you entered were entered as text, rather than
numbers. This can happen if the cells are formatted as Text when you
make your entry. It also frequently happens when values are pasted in,
particularly from web pages.

To coerce the "text numbers" to real numbers, copy an empty cell. Select
the "text numbers". Choose Edit/Paste Special, and select the Values and
Add radio buttons. Click OK.

Not sure what you tried here.

If you select multiple worksheets, any entry you make in one will be
made in all of the selected sheets.

What does "did not work" mean? Did you get an error message? An error
value in the cell(s)? An incorrect value? nothing? a crash?

For the formatting across worksheets - nothing happens. The values
changed in the active cell do not change on any of the other selected
worksheets. Must the row the items are in be identical? The worksheeets
are set up so there are several smaller groups broken down from the
main list. I am trying to make the change in the smaller group and have
it take effect in the main list as well (or the reverse if that would
make it work).

As for the remedy for forcing number values, it does not appear to
work. After following the steps, I still get the same error message.
The only thing is the error drop-down box now appears, allowing me to
then select to change to number one cell at a time. Since I have about
800 cells to do, this would seem very time consuming, and defeats the
purpose of having a computer!

Maybe I'll just have to deal with it as is.

Thanks for the help so far - I do appreciate it - just getting
frustrated spending hours on what seems like a relatively simple task.

Are you sure you have multiple sheets selected (i.e, select one sheet,
then CMD-click on subsequent sheet tabs, or SHIFT-click on a sheet tab
to select all sheets in-between)?

If you have, for example, Sheet1, Sheet2 and Sheet4 selected, then
changing cell G5 in any of those sheets will make the same change to
cell G5 in all of them.

I'm not sure what you mean by "smaller groups broken down from the main
list".

Perhaps a bit more clarification is in order.

Make sure you format the cells to be changed as General.

Make sure you've applied all the XL04 updaters. XL 11.1.1 allows you to
change all the numbers in a selection (which I didn't realize - XL11.0
didn't).
