Formatting lost, converts to text; contents lost

Several users on our network have reported a problem with
Word 97. Once in a while, they save a document, close it,
and open it again only to find some of the contents
missing and some of the formatting converted to text in
various symbol fonts (wingdings, etc.). This has only
been happening since we upgraded to Windows 2000 earlier
this year. In the most recent case, a table has
disappeared, with an error message "A table in this
document has become corrupted. To recover the
contents...." Instead of the table, gibberish symbols
like these are seen: Wì¥Áð¿ô3bjbjäêäê
(D?€?€Á/2ÿÿÿÿÿÿl???????sÈÈÈ8. It's not just happening
with tables, either. Does anyone have a clue?

Thanks.

I believe this is one effect of the Klez virus.
