Hello,
Multiple Excel 2003 files from the accounting department (not the same
person) end up losing formatting for no apparent reason. The file is working
fine. User saves work then closes file. Upon next opening (minutes, days,
weeks) there is a corruption error and the file loses all formatting. This
doesn't happen to all of the files but it's happened to at least 3 different
files several times each. One of the files I believe is the 4,000 combo
formatting limit but the other two files are small and only have bold, some
lines and some red text.
Error upon opening: Errors were detected in ‘filename.xls’ but Microsoft
Excel was able to open the file by making the repairs listed below. Save file
to make these repairs permanent. --Damage to the file was so extensive that
repairs were not possible. Excel attempted to recover your formulas and
values, but some data may have been lost or corrupted.
Relevant info:
-Excel 2003 SP2
-Cells contain < 250 characters
-Issue has occurred on at least 3 different computers with different files
-No external links in the file - However when saving the file on my machine
(Excel 2007) the compatibility message states: "some formulas in this
workbook are linked to other workbooks that are closed"
-No pivot tables
-No hidden text or worksheets
-Protection is off
-Formatting doesn't exceed 4000 combinations
-File size: 73 kb
-5 worksheets in the workbook
-No macros
Troubleshooting:
-Copy> Paste Special> Values only. Reformatted workbook taking care not to
exceed the limit.
-Unable to duplicate error on my computer
-All over google, google groups, Microsoft and this web site trying to find
someone with a similar issue. No luck
-Visually inspected all formulas using (Ctrl ` to toggle) but nothing was
linked to outside workbooks. Worksheets 2 - 5 contain one link to the first
worksheet and appears to be working properly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
