Formatting Marks, color of

Is it possible to set things up so that the formatting marks are displayed
in a different (less noticeable) color? Word 2007. Thanks for reading.

It is not really feasible. While you can use Edit>Replace to replace all of
the spaces with a space that is formatted with another colour, you would
have to do each ¶ individually by selecting it and you cannot do anything
about a tab space character or a new line break symbol.

Odd that one can apply a font color to spaces and paragraph marks but not to
tab characters and line break marks.

If you format your document using styles, the continuous display of
formatting marks is barely necessary. If you find them irritating turn them
off and just toggle them on to check formatting anomalies.
