Where can I find information on what a particular formatting mark means? If
you only have the symbol, it is hard to know where to look. My immediate
question is a black square that appears at the beginning of several lines in
a bulleted list. However, it would be helpful to find a table that defines
all the symbols. Thanks.

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm.

The black square indicates that the paragraph is formatted with the
“Keep with next,” “Keep lines together,” “Page break before,” or
“Suppress line numbers” property.
